Current champions showed their strength with a 4-2 victory but it was a battling performance from the Blues who almost rescued a result after falling behind.
The French side were ahead with two early goals in two minutes from Desire Doue and Ousmane Dembele before Vitinha added a third before the break.
But City tried to fight their way back into the game with Erling Haaland scoring twice, either side of a Maghnes Akliouche effort.
The Norwegian, who is now City’s record goalscorer in Europe, hit the bar as did Enzo Fernández while Gianluigi Donnarumma also saved a penalty from Ferran Torres late on.
