A first League Cup success since 1976 was secured on this day in 2014...

A stunning Yaya Toure strike, plus further goals from Samir Nasri and Jesus Navas, ensured City ran out 3-1 winners at Wembley against Sunderland.

The Black Cats had taken an early lead when Fabio Borini finished from a tight angle but Manuel Pellegrini’s men turned the game on its head before the hour.

Yaya Toure began the turnaround when he launched an unstoppable long-range drive past Sunderland stopper Vito Mannone, before Nasri lashed home a second just two minutes later.

And with Sunderland committing bodies forward in search of an equaliser, City rounded off the scoring when Navas completed a swift counter with a near-post finish to secure our first trophy of the season.

Clinching the League Cup in 2014 brought a 38-year wait for the trophy to an end, and City have since gone on to claim the crown an incredible six times in the following eight seasons.

And Pellegrini’s men would go on to add the Premier League crown to our cup success just two months later, pipping Liverpool to the post in a thrilling title race.
