Ilkay Gundogan was the man on the end of the remarkable passage of play, collecting Bernardo Silva’s cross and firing past David De Gea after City had kept the ball for one minute and 55 seconds.

It was a goal which ended United’s hopes of salvaging a point in a derby Pep Guardiola’s side had dominated.

David Silva opened the scoring with a close-range finish before Sergio Aguero arrowed an unstoppable drive beyond De Gea to deservedly double City’s lead.

United were handed a lifeline when Anthony Martial converted a penalty after Ederson had collided with Romelu Lukaku, but Gundogan’s goal ensured it was the blue half of Manchester enjoying the derby delight.
