On this day in 1975 Manchester City cruised to a 4-0 victory over Manchester United in the League Cup fourth round.

Dennis Tueart scored a brace, with Asa Hartford and Joe Royle netting one apiece as Tony Book’s side claimed the derby bragging rights in front of 50 thousand fans at Maine Road.

City opened the scoring in the first minute, as Tueart fired home from close range to net one of the quickest goals in derby history after Alan Oakes’ free-kick caused a scramble inside the penalty area.

Hartford doubled our lead when he smashed home Royle’s knockdown from Willie Donnachie’s pinpoint delivery and Tueart added a third inside 30 minutes with a fine solo goal that saw him carry the ball from the half-way line before picking out the bottom corner with a low drive.

Royle completed the rout 11 minutes from time, sliding in to convert a Peter Barnes’ cross at the front post.

Despite the convincing manner of victory, it proved to be a bittersweet night for City, as the late, great Colin Bell was stretchered off with a terrible knee injury which kept him out for more than 18 months following a tackle by United’s Martin Buchan.
