On 3 January 2019, City overcame a tough Liverpool side to beat Jurgen Klopp’s team 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

It was a first half of drama as John Stones scrambled to clear the ball off of Ederson’s goal line to deny Liverpool the lead.

And in front of a lively crowd, City legend Sergio Aguero gave the fans exactly what they wanted, the opening goal five minutes before half-time after Liverpool failed to clear a handful of City chances.

The second half was tense.

Roberto Firmino equalised in the 64th minute despite City’s best efforts to keep a clean sheet. Guardiola’s side knew they needed to take the intensity up a level if City were to succeed.

And eight minutes later Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane delivered.

A commanding driving run by Sterling left Liverpool’s defensive line scrambling back as City countered. The England international found Sane on the edge of the box.

The German international’s touch gave him space to take a strike on his left. And his pinpoint shot ricocheted off the far right post and into the back of the net to send City fans into a frenzy.

Aguero almost found a third after another counterattacking run by Sterling dragged the Liverpool defence and left Aguero through on goal. Good goalkeeping by Alisson kept Liverpool in the game.
