Rewind the clock 40 years ago to this very day and enjoy the best of the action from City’s momentous 5-1 final day victory at home to Charlton Athletic.

Played against the backdrop of a passionate 47.285 Maine Road full house and on a glorious May day, Billy McNeill’s City produced a five-star display that simply blew Charlton away.

It was a victory that sealed third place for City in Division Two – and meant that the Blues clinched promotion back to the topflight after a two-year absence.

Goals from David Phillips and Andy May put City two up inside the first 15 minutes.

And a three-goal salvo inside five minutes around the hour mark from Jim Melrose, Paul Simpson and Phillips once again completed the rout and sealed City’s ticket back to the big time.

It sparked a joyous pitch invasion from the City faithful who were eager to revel in the moment.
