28 years ago today Maine Road played host to one of the most memorable games in our former ground’s illustrious history as City overcame Tottenham 5-2.

In what former legendary BBC commentator John Motson described as one of the most memorable games he ever commentated on, Brian Horton’s City despatched a star-studded Spurs side in thrilling fashion.

Tottenham boss Ardiles had assembled one of the most attacking, flamboyant sides in English football history.

They had World Cup ‘94 stars Gheorghe Popescu, Ilie Dumitrescu and the great Jurgen Klinsmann, as well as Teddy Sheringham and Sol Campbell.

Horton’s City were equally as attacking, with two old-fashioned wide men in Nicky Summerbee and Peter Beagrie, and a little-and-large strike partnership of Paul Walsh and Niall Quinn.

What ensued is a match that would go down in City and Maine Road folklore.

City were outplayed for the first 20 minutes, before an inspired Paul Walsh, with something to prove against his old club, took over.
Walsh (2), Steve Lomas, Niall Quinn and Garry Flitcroft were all on target in a game for the ages.
