Anything but victory on that fateful day at Wembley Stadium would have left the Club facing an uncertain future and as the final whistle approached it looked like our worst fears would be realised.

Late goals from Carl Asaba and Robert Taylor put Gillingham on the brink of promotion with three minutes remaining, but an incredible turn of events saw Kevin Horlock and Paul Dickov score in stoppage time to take the game to extra time.

The two teams couldn’t be separated in the additional 30-minutes, but City’s unlikely comeback gave us the mental edge heading into the lottery of penalties, where Nicky Weaver made two saves and Horlock, Terry Cooke and Richard Edghill scored to give Joe Royle’s side a win that will never be forgotten.
