On this day in 2014, Manchester City kicked off the defence of our Premier League title with a 2-0 win over Newcastle United.

Sergio Aguero and David Silva got the goals to give Manuel Pellegrini’s side a comfortable victory at St James’ Park.

Edin Dzeko’s superb backheel allowed the Spanish midfielder to fire past Tim Krul for the opening goal before Aguero came off the bench to wrap up the points in added time.

Released by Fernandinho’s through ball, the Argentine saw his initial effort beaten away by the Magpies goalkeeper but recovered to steer in the rebound.

It was a deserved victory for City, who despite not being at our free-flowing best, were rarely troubled by a Newcastle attack which failed to register a single shot on target.

Starting XI: Hart, Clichy, Kompany, Demichelis, Kolarov, Nasri (Milner 78’), Fernando, Toure, Silva, Dzeko (Aguero 83’), Jovetic (Fernandinho 73’).
