On this day in 2008, Shaun Wright-Phillips marked his return to City with a brilliant brace as we ran out 3-0 winners at Sunderland.

Having competed his move back to the Etihad from Chelsea just three days earlier, SWP wasted no time in reminding everyone of his prodigious talent.

City had taken the lead through Stephen Ireland who side-footed the ball home after Danny Collins had deflected Michael Johnson’s cross into his path.

Wright-Phillips then took centre stage at the Stadium of Light, first pouncing at the back post to make it 2-0 by tapping home Jo’s cross-cum-shot from close range.

And the England winger then capped a day to remember by flicking Michael Ball’s long ball past Craig Gordon to seal a fine win for Mark Hughes’s men.
