Defending Premier League champions City headed over the M62 to take on a Hull side who won two and lost three of their first five matches.
It would prove to be an epic tussle between at the KC Stadium.
City raced into a 2-0 lead with goals from Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko inside the first 11 minutes.
But the hosts rallied, with two goals before the break sending the teams in level at 2-2.
But Manuel Pellegrini’s side would add further goals from Dzeko and a late fourth from Frank Lampard to head back from Humberside with a 4-2 win.
