Erling Haaland has admitted he didn’t expect his maiden season at City to be this historic after he was named Etihad Airways Player of the Season.

In the exceptional striker’s debut term at the Etihad Stadium, he helped Pep Guardiola’s side claim the Treble of the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup.

It was also a sensational personal campaign for the Norwegian frontman, as he smashed a swathe of records.

Thanks to his tally of 36 league goals, he has now set the record for most scored in a Premier League season while becoming the highest scoring City player in a single season with 52.

And Haaland says feels “happy and humble” to be named 2023’s Player of the Season.

“I didn’t expect this [season] to be this good,” he explained.

“I still expected to perform. I came into the team who won the Premier League in this previous two years, so to come in and perform I knew I was going to do [it].

“I was confident and I have also been really happy, I’ve been smiling a lot and enjoying myself, so that’s the most important thing.

“I’m really happy and humble to get this [award] as well.

“I really appreciate the support, of course, throughout the season and ever since I came here. I think it’s really important to appreciate people coming and supporting at home and away games.

“It’s really important to show that back. How they support us, we should also support them and thank them a lot.

“It’s a really nice connection [with the fans] and I’m really enjoying it.”
