The midfielder pounced when Mason Holgate and Michael Keane both failed to deal with Bernardo Silva’s left-wing cross, getting in behind the latter to guide the ball past Jordan Pickford from close range.

Everton created the better opportunities in the first half, with Jonjoe Kenny and Richarlison both going close, but Foden’s goal rewarded City’s dominance in the second period.

Guardiola’s men were denied by a string of fine saves from Pickford, who produced a brilliant double stop to thwart De Bruyne and then Bernardo, but survived a penalty scare in the finale minutes after VAR checked for a handball on Rodrigo only to find in the Spaniard’s favour.
