A Nico O’Reilly brace and late strike from Kevin De Bruyne were enough to see City book our place in the quarter-final draw for the seventh successive season.
Despite the Blues threatening in the early stages, it was the visitors who took the lead after the half hour through a powerful Maksym Talovierov header.
But City responded before the break when O’Reilly nodded a De Bruyne free-kick past Conor Hazard, despite the Plymouth goalkeeper getting a hand to the effort.
MATCH REPORT: CITY 3-1 PLYMOUTH
The visitors’ goal was leading a charmed life after the break, with Hazard producing a string of impressive saves to keep the scores level until O’Reilly once again pounced.
Once again, the youngster used his head to find the back of the net, meeting Phil Foden’s corner at the far post to hand use the advantage for the first time in the contest with 15 to play.
And as stoppage time approached the game was put to bed when Erling Haaland threaded the ball through to De Bruyne for a tap-in, after the Norwegian’s initial effort had been saved by Hazard.
