After falling three goals behind before the break, Pep Guardiola‘s men mounted a spirited second half fightback but were unable to force extra time at Wembley Stadium.
Liverpool took an early lead through an Ibrahima Konate header, before Sadio Mane pounced on an unfortunate error from Zack Steffen to double their lead inside 20 minutes.
Mane then added a third with a clinical near-post volley, but Jack Grealish reduced the deficit inside two minutes of the restart after being fed by Gabriel Jesus.
The pair combined once again with 20 to play when Grealish sent Jesus through on goal, but the Brazilian’s effort on goal was well saved by the onrushing Alisson.
City continued to pile on the pressure and were rewarded when Bernardo Silva poked home on the rebound from Riyad Mahrez‘s effort across the face of goal, but there was not enough time for Guardiola‘s men to force an equaliser.
