Manchester City have taken a huge, and fully deserved, step forward by reaching our first Champions League final, says captain Fernandinho.

After three successive quarter-final exits, a brace from Riyad Mahrez was enough to see off last season’s beaten finalists, Paris Saint-Germain, 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium and book our place in the Istanbul showpiece in the process.

And Fernandinho, celebrating his 36th birthday, insisted that everyone involved with the club should be proud of the part that they have played in what is shaping up to be a truly memorable campaign.

“I think this is a big step for the club and everyone,” he reflected after the victory.

“We are so grateful for everyone which has done so much for this club, worked so hard.

“This is a big achievement for us, I’m glad and grateful to reach the Champions League final for the first time, I think everyone deserves to celebrate.”
