Ilkay Gundogan has urged City to remain cool, calm and focused after the 1-1 UEFA Champions League last-16 first leg draw with RB Leipzig.

A superb Riyad Mahrez opener was cancelled out in the second half by Josko Gvardiol’s towering header to keep the tie finely poised ahead of the return leg in Manchester next month.

Captain Gundogan, who played the entire 90 minutes at the Red Bull Arena, feels we created enough to come away with victory and is eager to progress into the last eight at the Etihad Stadium.

He said: “The performance, especially in the first half, was really good. At the end as well, we had a couple of chances to get the winner.

“Unfortunately it was not meant to be.  It was the expected difficult second half.

“At the end of the day, it’s a good result to take home. Obviously now, we have to finish the job at the Etihad.

“Our game was a bit sloppy in the second half. We allowed them to get opportunities on transition. This is the Champions League, simple things get punished easily.”
