Ilkay Gundogan hopes that City's 2-0 Carabao Cup quarter-final defeat against Southampton can serve as a wake-up call for the squad.

First-half strikes from Sekou Mara and Moussa Djenepo saw the hosts advance to the last four of the competition at St Mary’s Stadium.

Gundogan said that City underperformed, but, with Pep Guardiola‘s men still competing in three competitions, the midfielder believes the team could take benefit from the loss in the long run.

“There’s no room for any mistakes, or for any poor performances like today,” he said.

“Hopefully, if there is something good we can take out of this game today, it was something like a wake up call at the right time.

“Even though it is sad and disappointing to be out of this cup, hopefully, at the end, in a few weeks we can at least look back and take something good out of this game.”
