Ilkay Gundogan says he still has a point to prove at City as he embarks on his second spell with the Club.

The midfielder, who made over 300 appearances and captained Pep Guardiola’s men to the Treble in 2023, rejoined City this summer after a season at FC Barcelona.

The move came as a surprise to Gundogan and City alike but, when the opportunity to bring our former captain back came about, the midfielder admits the process was swift.

In the above interview, Ilkay reflects on how he’s found his second stint at the Club so far, and why he felt it was the best decision for him at this moment in his career.

But while Gundogan looks back on his first spell with pride – he’s keen to add to the 14 major honours he collected during that initial seven-year spell.

SHOP THE THIRD KIT RANGE

Grabbing his first goal since his return to City in our 4-0 UEFA Champions League win over Slovan Bratislava, and wearing the captain’s armband again, certainly helped to show that!

“I’m sure he [Pep Guardiola] wouldn’t have signed me if he didn’t think I could contribute and help us achieve good things this season,” he said.

“Obviously I also have a point to prove, I didn’t come back just to enjoy it and sit back, I came to perform and to compete.

“That’s what I want to do this season, and I want to help and contribute in the best possible way for this team’s success.”
