Joao Cancelo has revealed how the support of the ‘amazing Manchester City family’ was one of the key factors in his decision to sign a new contract.

The Portuguese defender has signed a two-year contract extension which will extend his stay at the Etihad through until the summer of 2027.

Cancelo has gone from strength to strength since joining the Club from Juventus in the summer of 2019 and was a key component in our twin Premier League and Carabao Cup successes of last term.

This season, if anything, Cancelo’s impact has been even more profound with the full-back helping the reigning champions open up a nine-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.

And in a special interview with mancity.com, the 27-year-old spoke about how the support and friendship he has been afforded from his City team-mates and staff had helped make his decision to pen the new deal such an easy one – and how that unity was underpinning our continued quest for success.

“It’s a club I like to be in. The staff that works here is amazing, it’s a real family,” said Cancelo.

“It made complete sense for me to extend my contract here, also for my family as well. I feel great in this club and my teammates help me to improve every day.

“It’s an amazing group here. I think we all have a great relationship with each other, and I met some great friends in the team that I didn’t know before.

“I have a great relationship with Riyad Mahrez, I also have a great relationship obviously with Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias. With Ederson, Gabriel Jesus and Fernandinho too.

“All the English players are fantastic guys, very extrovert and they like the banter! I think despite having so many nationalities in the squad, we are a very strong group.

“That is very good to achieve because we all want the same things, which is winning trophies. We succeed as individuals, but we need to succeed first as a team.”
