Josko Gvardiol says he was proud to be named last season’s Etihad Player of the Season but says team honours are more important.

The Croatian became only the second defender to win the award at City when he was voted ahead of Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland for the prize.

Speaking ahead of our Champions League game with Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday night at 20:00 (UK), Gvardiol says he would rather City had added to our recent haul of silverware.

“It’s nice to get an award like I got last season but still it didn’t make me happy because we struggled a lot,” he said.

“Last season we did not win the Premier League and were close in the FA Cup but as a footballer you want to win the titles.”
