Nathan Ake and Mateo Kovacic both went closest for City on either side of half-time, whilst former City player Gabriel Jesus and substitute Leandro Trossard threatened for the visitors.
In the end though, the two sides were forced to settle for a point with Liverpool emerging as new leaders after their earlier 2-1 win at home to Brighton.
Summer signing Gvardiol proved to be a pivotal part of the defence with the Croatian enjoying one of his finest games in a City shirt to date.

“I’m happy, but I don’t want to talk about my performance,” the defender began.
“I want to talk about the team performance today, and the way we performed and if you ask me, we deserved much more than just the point but we need to move on to the next one.”
Reflecting on the game, the Croatian said there was much to commend about our display and said the point could yet prove to be crucial come the end of the season.
“That’s football,” Gvardiol expressed.
“In some games there won’t be many opportunities to score a goal but when you get a chance you need to score it and we could’ve scored at the end with a corner kick, but we didn’t.”
“The good thing is we didn’t lose, and a point means we are still in the game to fight for a title and there’s still a long journey, so we just need to be on the highest level till the end of the season.”
