Second half goals from Dusan Vlahovic and Weston McKennie ensured three points for the hosts on Matchday Six despite plenty of possession and intent from the Blues.
Erling Haaland had a chance to give City the lead at the break but his delicate chipped effort was well saved by Michele Di Gregorio.
Di Gregorio had to be on his toes in the second period as Pep Guardiola’s men went in search of the breakthrough but it was Thiago Motta’s side that emerged victorious.
First Vlahovic headed home the opener and then McKennie produced a clinical finish – set up by fellow sub Timothy Weah – to double the lead.
City kept pushing but couldn’t find a way back into the game as the clock ticked down to full-time.
