As part of Manchester City’s International Women’s Day celebrations, Kalvin Phillips reflects on the key female figures who have shaped him into the person and footballer he is today.

While the City midfielder looks back fondly on his childhood growing up in Leeds, he was acutely aware of the sacrifices his mother and grandmother both made to ensure his early years were as happy as possible.

Growing up in a single parent household alongside his two sisters and brother, Phillips’ mother worked two jobs to provide for her children.

It often meant Kalvin would only have fleeting conversations with her, instead spending time at his grandparents’, who lived down the road.

‘Granny Val’ shot to fame in the Amazon series which focused on Leeds United’s 2018/19 Championship season.

In a candid and heartfelt interview, the midfielder looks back on the influence his grandmother - who sadly passed away in 2021 - and his mother had on those formative years.

He also enjoys an incredibly strong bond with his two sisters, one of whom he still lives with in Manchester, which is reflected in the above video.

From stories of Granny Val miming along to the television through to the faces he pulled to make his youngest sister laugh as a toddler, Phillips goes into great detail about the women who have made him the man he is today.
