Salford City manager Karl Robinson knows City and Pep Guardiola will give his side everything we have on Saturday evening.

We welcome the League Two promotion chasers to the Etihad Stadium in the FA Cup third round for a 17:45 (UK) kick-off on 11 January.

Despite being just four miles apart, this game represents the first ever competitive meeting between the two clubs.

The Ammies will be full of confidence, having won their last six matches in the fourth tier of the English pyramid without conceding a goal.

City v Salford City | Match preview

Robinson, who has been a manager in the Football League since 2010, has come up against us twice before.

We faced his Oxford United twice in two seasons in the League Cup in 2018 and 2019, winning both games on the way to lifting the trophy.

Robinson still has vivid memories of those nights.

Speaking to Matchday Live presenter Natalie Pike earlier this week, he said: “I think Phil Foden scored his first ever goal against me. And I got criticised that night because I’d said ‘Oh I think he’s world class’ and a few people had a bit of a dig at me for saying that. So it I’ll never forget the first time.

“The two times I’ve played City, there has never been a point where your manager or your football club ever disrespect the opposition.

“I think that’s why Pep Guardiola is respected right across the world because he gets the culture of the countries that he works in and every time he goes and competes.

“His team is always at their best that they possibly can be for that particular game. Which is not going to help at the weekend.”

While City have become famed for attractive attacking football under Guardiola, Robinson believes the secret to our sustained success and magnificent trophy haul is actually in our team spirit and work ethic.

“When you see Pep’s teams play, people only ever see the good bits,” he stated.

“And I think that’s the secret to when you see that his team and you are on a touchline next to him is the horrible bit of football that they’re brilliant at.

“How they regain the football, how hard they work for each other, at moments when they’re challenged. It almost makes me smile because there’s a grit and a determination to them that you think, that’s why you do this job.

“I think I’ve been influenced by him because I love the style. I love the transparency of being, it always seems like he’s the best version of himself, and when we played them the first time, I’ll never forget like when he came in.

“I’ve been lucky enough to manage against a lot of Premier League managers and he’s probably the best.”
