Kevin De Bruyne says agreeing a two-year contract extension at Manchester City was an easy decision because he is playing in a team whose philosophy excites him.

The Belgian midfielder acknowledged City’s inventive style of play was a factor in his decision to renew his existing deal and commit his future to the Club until 2025.

Widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world, De Bruyne has been a key architect of our success in his five-and-a-half-years at the Etihad Stadium, during which he has won two Premier League titles, one FA Cup and four League Cups.

Under Pep Guardiola City have become masters of free-flowing attacking football and the 29-year-old has loved being part of such a set-up.

“It wasn’t difficult for me,” he told mancity.com after putting pen to paper on the extension.

“I have been really fortunate – when I came here, we had a good team and over the years a lot of players changed but I remained, so that’s a good thing.

“We’ve won a lot of trophies, the team is really good, and the way we play excites me - and that’s the way I want to go forward, so it wasn’t difficult for me.”

De Bruyne has thrived as a driving midfield force in Guardiola’s system, winning the PFA Player of the Year award in the 2019/20 season.

He says the manager’s approach helps gets the best out of him and feels the same way about his team-mates, with the level of competition in the squad helping to drive his own level of performance.

“It helps,” he added when asked if he has benefited from Guardiola’s philosophy.

“The main reason is the feeling – how I feel about this club and the team. The team push me to get to this level.

“It’s not easy to compete all the time with these players because they are so good, but they help me to perform the best I can.

“It’s a mix of everything that helps me be who I am, and I get to do what I do best, which is be on the pitch and help the teammates win.”
