Kevin De Bruyne says City weren't surprised by Atletico Madrid's stubborn resistance in our 1-0 Champions League quarter-final first leg win.

The Belgian midfielder broke the deadlock at the Etihad Stadium, latching onto a pass from Phil Foden before firing past Jan Oblak, handing us a crucial advantage ahead of next week’s return leg in Madrid.

De Bruyne‘s clinical finish proved decisive against a typically rigid Atletico defence, but the midfielder explained that it was nothing less than what Pep Guardiola‘s ranks anticipated heading into the match.

He said: “It was a performance that everyone expected, two different styles and it was very hard.

“It’s not frustrating when you know it is going to happen, I know from the outside it was a hard watch, it was hard to play in but we just have to respect the way they play.

“We just need to concentrate on what we have to do and that is what we did, one-nil is not a big score but at least we have an advantage going there.”
