In our new series 'KitStory', we reflect on some of the standout kits of recent years and the inspirations behind them.

Presented by Mancunian City fan and DJ Kennedy Taylor, the second episode focuses on the 2022/23 away kit.

Last week we saw Kennedy speak to a host of familiar City faces about the current home shirt and now she’s back again to learn more about the iconic number of last term.

The red and black stripes hark back to a famous era of success when the likes of Colin Bell, Francis Lee and Mike Summerbee took us to final victories in the 1969 FA Cup, 1970 League Cup and 1970 European Cup Winners’ Cup.

In 2011/12 it was reintroduced as we broke our drought of 44 years without a top-flight title and as such, is now firmly established as a fans’ favourite.

Kennedy again speaks to a range of voices who love the shirt for different reasons.

First, she hears from Dr Gary James who provides the historical context before FG gives the fan perspective.

Ruben Dias and Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw then let us know what wearing this shirt so steeped in history means to a player.

There’s also time for PUMA representatives Alonso Sanchez and Josele Angulo to discuss what made this kit a must have and Jack Mooney and Billy Astle from Classic Football Shirts to deep dive into the hobby of collecting shirts.
