In the third and final episode of our feature series, DJ and City fan Kennedy Taylor speaks to fans and experts about our 2019/20 PUMA away kit.
The shirt celebrated the city’s “Madchester” years, a period of extraordinary cultural activity in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The kit was directly inspired by former nightclub, The Haçienda, which was once an epicentre for emerging music, bands, DJs, and artists.
Using black colour as a base, the kit features yellow stripes on the left shoulder: a reference to The Haçienda’s iconic graphic identity. Additional peach and City blue pops create a colourful representation of this legendary cultural icon that was the heartbeat of the city.
We even lifted the Carabao Cup in this kit, beating Aston Villa 2-1 at Wembley.
In this episode, Taylor speaks to Club historian Dr Gary James about the kit’s origins and PUMA’s Josele Angulo and Alonso Sanchez on creating the shirt.
After that, she catches up with fan Dr Umir Irfan and Manchester Music legend and fellow blue, Mike Pickering.
Finally, Jack Mooney and Billy Astle from Classic Football Shirts give more context into the phenomenon of collecting both retro and modern football tops.
Earlier in the series we heard all about the 2023/24 home shirt and the 2022/23 away kit.
