He endured final heartbreak in 2020, 2021, 2022, 2024 and 2025, but he now finally has a winners medal in football’s oldest competition, which evaded him for so long.
“Amazing, amazing! I love the competition,” said Kovacic in an interview with the Matchday Live panel after the game.
“I’ve been in a few finals and lost them all but today is a happy day. We won and I think it’s a big push for the final two games.
“We have a lot of winners in this group. I think we can handle the pressure. These guys have done it for a long period. And we stay calm, we know our moment can come.
“Today during the whole game we stayed calm and during the whole season, we are composed when it matters the most.
“Now the last two games will define out season. We are ready for that.”
The midfielder spoke about the team’s winning mentality, touched on his difficult season suffering from injury and provided a farewell message for John Stones and Bernardo Silva.
