Riyad Mahrez became the first City player to score a hat-trick at Wembley in our 3-0 win over Sheffield United in the semi-final of the FA Cup.

His trio of goals means we will face either Brighton and Hove Albion or Manchester United in the final on Saturday 3 June.

Mahrez gave City the lead after he successfully converted a penalty in the 43rd minute.

The Algerian international doubled City’s lead at the hour mark after a jaw-dropping solo run from the halfway line ended with a clinical finish.

And to top it off five minutes later, Mahrez tallied his third of the match with his first touch after Jack Grealish found him near the penalty spot.

After booking our place in the final, Mahrez spoke about the importance of the competition to him.

“As a French and Algerian guy, no,” said Mahrez when asked if he knew about the FA Cup’s history prior to moving to England.

“Since I am here [England] nine years I know how important the FA Cup is. It has become important for me and for us and that’s why I’m really happy to contribute and arrive there [the final].”

And after narrowly missing out on a place in the final for the last three seasons – after defeats to Arsenal (2020), Chelsea (2021) and Liverpool (2022) – our spot in the final two means more to City.

“We really wanted to make sure that today we win the game and have a good performance,” explained Mahrez.

“The last three years we came here in the semi-final and we lost and we really wanted to make sure we go through this time. And I think we did a good game and really solid game and serious game and we deserve to go to the final.”
