Pep Guardiola says Bernardo instinctively tried to prevent a goal with his action on the goal-line that led to a red card and attaches no blame to his captain

At his post-match press conference following a 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid, the boss was asked if Bernardo’s decision was a mistake.

He replied: “Come on, it’s not a mistake. It’s the first red card of his career. It’s an instinctive action.

“It’s not one that can be avoidable. Okay, now I’d say let them score and try 11 v 11 4-0 down. It will be difficult but see what happens.

“Never ever I will blame my player for that especially Bernardo after what he has done for us for many years.”

Pep also revealed the decision to substitute Erling Haaland on 57 minutes was purely tactical and confirmed the Norwegian will be fine for Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Arsenal.

“ We had two or three chances to make it 2-1 early in the second half, but after 15 or 20 minutes, I wanted fresh legs and other people,” said the boss.
