Haaland’s first goal came on 19 minutes and was enough to give City a first-half lead.
A mis-hit Kylian Mbappe goal levelled the scores on the hour, before Haaland scored again from the penalty spot ten minutes from time.
Madrid then struck on 87 and 90+2 to take a 3-2 first leg lead back to Spain.
