Pep Guardiola said the dominant manner of City’s 4-0 win over newly crowned champions Liverpool was proof positive of his side’s hunger and motivation to secure more silverware this season.

Despite having relinquished the league crown to the visitors last week, City were in imperious mood at the Etihad, scoring three goals in the opening 45 minutes and adding a fourth after the break.

With the Carabao Cup already secured for a third straight season, the victory saw City take another huge step towards securing second spot in the league.

And with an FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal and a crucial Champions League last 16 decider against Real Madrid on the horizon, the boss asserted that the win proved his players were full of desire and hunger to achieve more silverware this season.

“It’s good for us for the game against Arsenal in the semis and especially against Madrid in the second leg,” Guardiola declared.

“These kinds of games help us to try to do it. The most important thing is, when a team wins eight titles out of the last 10 comps they play, it’s because they are an incredible team.

“With the results Liverpool have done, no one could stop them in any country. What we have done in the last years is unique and exceptional. That won’t change because we lose (the title) to Liverpool.

“It (tonight) was really important for us for Arsenal and Madrid.”
