It all started on August 15 1992, with Sheffield United striker Brian Deane’s header in a 2-1 win over Manchester United the first-ever Premier League goal.
The first Super Sunday saw Nottingham Forest host Liverpool, with Sky’s five-hour broadcast changing the face of football coverage in the UK. “Weekends will never be the same again,” said presenter Richard Keys. Teddy Sheringham scored a fine goal to give Brian Clough’s side a 1-0 win.
And then the first Monday Night Football match saw Peter Reid’s Manchester City host Queens Park Rangers at Maine Road as Sky Sports ushered in a new era of Premier League football with the introduction of the Monday evening matches that are now a staple of the fixture schedule.
A dance troupe, overhead plane banners, cameras in dressing rooms, a firework display on the pitch and a parachute team delivering the match ball from the skies made it a unique spectacle.
City, with new signing Rick Holden making his debut, took the lead before half-time when David White tapped into an empty net after visiting keeper Jan Stejskal parried Niall Quinn’s effort invitingly into his path.
QPR levelled in spectacular fashion, when Andy Sinton gave Tony Coton no chance with a 20-yard effort that flew into the top corner.
