Pep Guardiola has saluted City fans’ loyalty over the years, especially during the more difficult seasons during our time at Maine Road.

City often played in front of gates of 30,000-plus in the third tier of English football and the boss believes it’s important to enjoy the current trophy-laden era as much as possible given our not-too-distant past.

Asked by a journalist at his pre-Tottenham press conference if complacency could ever creep in among home supporters used to seeing their team win consistently on match days, Guardiola disagreed.

“No, I don’t think so,” he said.

“Listen, the fans I love them to come, and it takes a lot of effort, so thank you so much, but we want them to enjoy, have fun and have one hour and thirty minutes in the good moments – and that depends on us.”

He went on to add: “This is a club who came from Maine Road and didn’t fight for titles for many years, but they were there.

“All the time when things weren’t good, they were there. I wasn’t there, but many people have told me what it was like.

“The most important thing is, and I know they do it, the players are always there.”
