When Julian Alvarez thumped home the opening goal on 17 minutes, the majority of the Etihad settled back and waited for the defending champions to dominate and add to the scoreline.

But Joao Cancelo’s challenge on Harry Wilson just 10 minutes later resulted in a straight red card for the Portuguese and the Cottagers then levelled from the spot.

With more than an hour to play, City had to dig deep to try and find another goal.

For long periods, it seemed Fulham would hold on to claim a point - or maybe nick a winner themselves.

But Kevin De Bruyne‘s persistence won a penalty deep into added time that Haaland converted to give City a 2-1 victory.
