Each day as part of ‘Maine Road 100’ we’re bringing you a special memory match to enjoy – and today’s produced one of the most amazing atmospheres in the history of our famous old ground.

There’d been heartache two seasons before, in 1982/83, as we’d lost 1-0 to Luton Town, a result on the final day that ensured our relegation from Division One and that had Hatters boss David Pleat darting across the pitch to celebrate.

The following campaign, 1983/84 saw us finish fourth behind promoted teams Newcastle United, Sheffield Wednesday and champions Chelsea.

But we weren’t to be denied the next season, although we left it late!

Billy McNeill’s side needed a win on the final day to go up and they did the business in style, defeating a deflated Addicks side 5-1 in front of a boisterous, joyous Maine Road crowd.

David Phillips (2), Andy May, Jim Melrose and Paul Simpson scored the all-important goals in front an 47,285 crowd.
