Pep Guardiola has reiterated his respect for Burnley boss and former City captain Vincent Kompany.

The Belgian played for City for 11 seasons, eight of those as skipper, winning 12 major honours.

Since leaving the Etihad in 2019 shortly after inspiring us to our fourth Premier League title, Kompany has gone on to forge a coaching career with Anderlecht and Burnley.

He led the Clarets to the top-flight in his first campaign at Turf Moor but has seen his team struggle this term, picking up 12 points from 21 games.

Kompany first returned to the Etihad last season for an FA Cup clash, when Guardiola revealed his discussions with his former defender in the early stages of the younger man’s life as a manager.

Now City welcome Burnley to the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday 31 January, with kick-off scheduled for 19:30 (UK).

Ahead of the game, Guardiola reflected on the close relationship he has with Kompany and the form of his Burnley side.

“I have a lot of respect for Vinnie,” the boss said.

“I know what he’s trying to do but sometimes the results are bad but the team is alive. They played really well at Villa away in the FA Cup at Spurs.

“We have to be careful. We prepare as much as possible for tomorrow.”
