Pep Guardiola says Manchester City's future success in the Champions League depends on how his players react to the disappointment of a third successive quarter-final defeat.

City lost 3-1 to Lyon and will now have a well-earned break before the Premier League resumes next month.

After 59 games and a campaign that has lasted more than a year, Guardiola wants his players to recharge their batteries and return stronger next season.

“After the break when we start again, we will recover,” said Pep.

“We will restart again and try to win this competition again.

“Of course, I am not able with these guys to break the quarter-final stage. Three years in a row we are out.

“But life is how you stand up to adversity and next season we will try again. The show must go on. Now it’s time for the players to take a break. We will give them as many days as possible.

“Next season we will be strong and demanding. We will now try and rest and then think about next season.”
