City needed a sparkling display against Newcastle to take full advantage of Liverpool’s draw with Spurs - and to banish the disappointment of the Champions League exit on Wednesday.
The defending champions dominated from the start, going in at the break with a two-goal lead thanks to a header from Raheem Sterling and a close-range finish by Aymeric Laporte.
Rodrigo made it 3-0 on the hour before late goals from Phil Foden and Sterling completed the rout.
