Kyle Walker has compared Ilkay Gundogan's late season form to that of Real Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane at his peak.

The City skipper has been in superb form on the season run-in and has scored four goals in the last two Premier League games to leave the Blues on the brink of a third successive title.

Walker, speaking to the gathered media at the CFA ahead of our clash with Real Madrid says it is typical of the Germany star to find his best form at the most crucial part of the campaign.

“I’ve seen a few tweets and been joking with Gundo that he turns into prime Zidane in the last few months,” smiled Walker.

“Sometimes you have to shine, and he does it at the business end of the season.”

The City and England right-back says that nothing was ever over in terms of winnable silverware this season.

He revealed that Pep Guardiola had told his players that if Arsenal were within touching distance when they visited the Etihad, the title race would still be on.

He added that this part of the season is when the squad shifts into top gear, as has happened many times in recent years.

“In the Champions League, I thought we were doing well,” said Walker.

“In the Premier League, there was a big gap and we didn’t want it to be bigger – there is a fine line where it could’ve been over, but with this group, nothing’s over, we kick on at the business end of the season.”

Walker was also asked how, at 32, he has maintained his electric pace.

On a number of occasions in the 3-0 win at Everton on Sunday, Walker turned on the afterburners to help his fellow defenders out.

He says his continued pace is partly down to his DNA and part keeping himself in tiptop condition.

“I’m 32, but not old!” he said.

“I still feel great and have kept fit, bar the injury where I ruptured my groin before the World Cup.

“I look after myself on and off the field and get the work in the gym to cope with the load.

“I have to thank mum and dad too - genetics - some players slow down, but I hit 37.5kmph the other day in speed – I don’t seem to be getting slower and long may that continue.”

And on the topic of pace, Walker was asked who was quicker after UEFA stats suggested both Kyle and Erling Haaland had his 35.2kmph in the Champions League this season

“The manager doesn’t like to do things over big areas so both of us take time to get up to speed,” he said.

“Erling’s very quick, he’s shown that with some of the goals he’s scored..

“Other strikers don’t make those chances, sometimes he does it just with strength or speed but I’d still have to back myself!”
