Bernardo’s impact and influence has been immense in the eight years he has been at City since signing from Monaco in the summer of 2017, with the midfielder helping the Club amass 18 major trophies in that time.
Guardiola’s admiration for the Portuguese midfielder was further amplified this summer when he appointed the 31-year-old as club captain for the 2025/26 season.
And addressing the media in Monaco at his pre-match press conference, the City boss again made plain his huge admiration for Bernardo ahead of his return to his former stamping ground.
“He cannot do better as a captain,” Guardiola declared..

“He is one of the best in training, he is an extraordinary player, so intelligent and smart. he can play in so many positions. We’re really happy to have him.
“He accepted the role alongside Ruben, Rodri, and the other ones and he’s doing really well.”
