Manchester City’s clash with Queens Park Rangers on 17 August 1992 will forever go down in the history books.

Just under 20 years later, a clash between the two sides would become arguably the most famous victory in our history, but our showdown with the London side on this day 31 years ago signified a hugely significant chapter in English football’s story.

Andy Sinton’s impressive equaliser would cancel out David White’s strike in a 1-1 draw at Maine Road in what was the very first Monday Night Football fixture.

Now a staple part of the domestic calendar’s weekly offering, the initial show rounded off an exciting first weekend of the newly branded Premier League.

Under player-manager Peter Reid’s guidance, City would go on to finish ninth that year, and have since gone on to win the Premier League title seven times, including each of the last three.

Featuring interviews with White – our first goalscorer in the Premier League – as well as the reflections of City supporters who were there at the time, the above video looks back at that opening clash with QPR.

Spanish midfielder Rodrigo, the man whose goal saw us named Champions of Europe for the very first time, also shares his thoughts, with Premier League football forming a key part of his early memories of the beautiful game.
