Brief action from the first leg of our Carabao Cup semi-final at St James' Park.

It always looked a tough test on paper.

City lost 2-1 to Newcastle at St James’ Park earlier this season and the hosts had scored in every home game this season, as well as managing some stirring fightbacks in recent weeks.

The Blues were looking for a positive result to take back to the Etihad on 4 February when the teams meet again for the second leg.

After a cagey and bad tempered first half, James Trafford was to make a superb save just after the restart - but City were ahead a few minutes later as Antoine Semenyo turned in Bernardo’s flick from close range.

Semenyo seemed to have doubled our lead 10 minutes later, but VAR ruled otherwise.

Rayan Cherki sealed an impressive 2-0 win deep into added time to give the Blues the advantage in this tie.
