Pep Guardiola says Josko Gvardiol’s recent performances at centre-back prove he’s an option to play that role more in the future.

The Croatian joined City in the summer of 2023 having spent much of his senior career up to that point in the heart of the defence.

However, he has since featured mostly at left-back for the Blues with incredible success – excelling defensively but also providing plenty going forward, scoring 10 goals and providing five assists.

How to watch City v Aston Villa on TV

Injuries to our backline have seen him revert to the middle alongside Ruben Dias, with Academy graduate Nico O’Reilly starting at left-back.

In his four matches at centre-back, City have conceded just twice and kept three clean sheets.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday night’s clash with Aston Villa, Guardiola says Gvardiol’s recent showings have given him more to consider when he has a fully fit squad to pick form.

“I like him there. Especially the build up with the left. He’s so fast going in behind,” he said.

“Him and Ruben talk a lot and they are doing a really good partnership. It’s an option.

“I don’t think the club needs central defenders, we have a lot and we bought two young ones. Important to have a player that can play there and left back.”
