Pep Guardiola believes City's fourth round tie in the Carabao Cup will prepare his side for the return of the Premier League following the upcoming World Cup break.

City’s 2-0 victory over Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night sealed progression to the last 16 of the competition for the ninth consecutive season.

That fourth round tie will be played the week commencing 19 December, before the Premier League returns after Christmas.

When is the Carabao Cup Round Four draw?

While many of City’s players will be in Qatar, Guardiola believes the extra match will be of benefit to the players who will not feature in the tournament.

Speaking in his press conference following the victory over Chelsea, he said: “Those who have not qualified will have one more week than we have for holidays.

“It will be good for Sergio, Riyad and the players not at the World Cup to have the rhythm before we go to Leeds for the first Premier League game after the World Cup.”
