Riyad Mahrez‘s second half strike was enough to seal a 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge and reduce the gap to leaders Arsenal to just five points after 17 matches.
Having won four of the last five Premier League titles, Guardiola was delighted to see the will to win within his players.
Speaking in his post-match press conference, the boss highlighted the importance of the hard fought three points.
He said: “It could have been 10 points between us and Arsenal if Newcastle hadn’t made an incredible effort and we hadn’t won here.
“I said to the players that it doesn’t change much – we still have 63 points to play for, so there are a lot of points.
“We have to continue to prove ourselves because it is normal to be in this position after four Premier League titles in five years.
“I would prefer to be closer, but the way Arsenal play so far, they deserve to be where they are.
“It was so important, especially in the second half, to prove that we can do it again and again and again.”
