Pep Guardiola believes the competition in the Manchester City squad is stronger this season.

The boss hopes to have several players back in contention for this Saturday’s Premier League clash with Everton at 15:00 (UK).

He confirmed that Rayan Ait-Nouri and Omar Marmoush have returned to training while Mateo Kovacic featured for Croatia during the international break as he continues his recovery from an Achilles injury.

City v Everton | Injury news

Guardiola says that it’s important to have strength in the squad as we enter the hectic autumn and winter schedule when we will be playing twice a week.

He said: “The year of the Treble, you know the players I had on the bench? Aymeric Laporte, an incredible central defender for the national team, Julian [Alvarez], Riyad [Mahrez], and all the other ones.

“I would love to have them but they want to play. And if they don’t play, they leave. Julian had to compete with Erling [Haaland] and when that happens it’s tough.

“Now he’s in one of the best teams in the world Atletico Madrid, playing with a top class manager and players, and performing as well.

“Maybe I’d love to have him but I understand, we have many examples of that.

“The year of the Treble if we had the injuries last we had last season, it’s not possible, forget about it.”
