Pep Guardiola says he has been impressed with Benjamin Mendy’s work on the training ground as he saluted his performance in the victory over Fulham.

The Frenchman has made just 14 appearances this season, but the Manchester City manager is pleased with his attitude and effort during a period in which his game time has been restricted.

Guardiola switched to a 3-5-2 formation at Craven Cottage, with Mendy deployed in a wing-back role on the left flank and the Catalan felt the set-up got the best out of the 26-year-old.

“Really well – really well,” said Guardiola when asked about the defender’s training ground performance.

“[He is] happy in the locker room. Benjamin is an exceptional human being.

“He has specific qualities and we played with wing backs. It was perfect for his quality, but he showed attention, aggression, he didn’t lose balls and in the final third his crosses were brilliant.

“[I am] satisfied with his performance.”
